Solar Energy

Smart Energy South Africa > Solar Energy

With South Africa’s electricity supply under strain, many people are choosing Solar Energy to power homes and businesses because of its many advantages. Solar Energy is energy provided by the sun that is converted into thermal or electrical energy. It is the cleanest and most abundant renewable energy source currently available.

The energy is collected through direct sunlight, so even when there are clouds that seem to be blocking the sun, the Solar Energy will continue to refill. One of its greatest advantages is that you will never run out.

Solar Energy Power Systems

The energy source has become so popular that it is common to see Solar Panels on the roofs of many homes in Cape Town. Solar panels are devices that convert light into electricity. One panel is made of many small solar cells. Each of these cells uses light to make electrons move. The cell is made up of two different layers that are stuck together. The first layer is loaded with electrons, so the electrons are ready to jump from this layer to the second layer. That second layer has had some electrons taken away, so it’s ready to take in more electrons.

When the light hits an electron in the first layer, the electron jumps to the second layer. That electron makes another electron move and so on. It is the sunlight that starts the flow of electricity.

Advantages of PV Solar Energy Systems:

  • It’s cost-effective and you’ll never run out
  • No more high electricity bills
  • Safe for the environment
  • Access solar power anywhere & No maintenance

Frequently asked questions

Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels contain a semiconductor material (typically silicon-based) which converts sunlight into direct-current (DC) electricity. An on-site inverter converts the DC power to AC power, which can then be connected to a building’s power supply or directly to the electricity grid.

This is determined by a number of factors, including geographic location, specific energy consumption tariff, slope and shading of roof structure or piece of ground where solar panels will be mounted.

The Operations and Maintenance service includes several activities to monitor solar system performance and detect errors early on, ensuring the overall efficiency of the system for its lifetime. These services generally include:

  • Monthly Reports showing PV performance, energy, demand and financial savings
  • On-site support and maintenance of solar systems, including fault fixing and routine cleaning
  • Comparison of PV performance with on-site irradiance
  • Access to an Online Portal to see live plant performance
  • Annual Report with financial and plant performance results
  • Continuous performance monitoring and alarm triggers indicating necessary remedial work
  • Access to highly experienced professionals for advice and queries on a range of topics related to Solar PV
